Well.... I started off well last night, correctly picking 3 out of the 4 prelims, and then swiftly moving on to correctly picking the first two main event bouts – but then it drastically went downhill!
Image Credit: Onlinewire Results (winner is Bold and my correct picks indicated by (+)
(+) Stephan Bonnar v Krzysztof Soszynski (TKO – doctors stoppage due to cut in round 3) Contoversy! Was the cut caused by a head butt? Doctor stoppage – Bonnar questions the decision since the cut may have been caused by an illegal head butt.
(+) Chris Lytle v Brian Foster (SUB – knee bar in round 1) As predicted Lytle takes advantage of a takedown attempt and makes Foster tap due to knee bar taking home submission of the night! Good one Chris!
(-) CB Dollaway v Goran Reljic (unanimous decision) CB takes the decision with 29-28 on all judges score card taking the last two rounds as his own.
(+) James Te Huna v Igor Pokrajac (TKO – strikes in round 3)
Main Event
(+) Mirko Cro Cop v Anthony Perosh (TKO – doctors stoppage due to cut in round 2) I give props to Anthony Perosh for taking this fight at 2 days notice especially against the legend known as Cro-cop! However, it was not his night. The fight revolved around failed takedown attempts by Perosh (with some impressive sprawls by Cro-cop!) and him stepping back from Cro-cop most of the two rounds. If I am being honest I was quite relived when the fight was stopped at the end of round 2 by doctor’s advice – the poor guy needed a break. Hard to say if Cro-cop looked impressive against such an opponent. Despite Perosh losing in his return to the Octagon, I would like to give him some ‘Hayley’ awards: *Guy who most looked like a librarian* *Face explosion of the night – tied with Stephan Bonnar I must add* *Guy with the stupidest nickname* – Hippo? Not sure how to comment on that at all.... I’m sure this will cheer him up!
(+) Keith Jardine v Ryan Bader (KO – left hook in round 3) Ryan Bader looked impressive and managed to catch Jardine as he is backing up against the cage for a KO win. I just hope the mumbles going on about Jardine possibly being handed his papers are not true.... Now this is the point that it all started to go incredibly wrong for me....
(-) Joe Stevenson v George Sotiropoulos (unanimous decision) This fight was awarded Fight of the Night and I completely agree! Sotiropoulos displayed a very dominant performance versus Joe and managed to get 30-27 on all 3 judges’ score cards! People wonder why I prefer to watch the little guys fight – just watch this fight and you know why. The grappling was very slick and technical – very impressed by both guys, particularly George! Welcome to the big time George. In addition to Fight of the Night honours I’m sure George and Joe will be very pleased to hear that they have also been awarded the Hayley awards for: *Most enjoyable fight of the night* *Surprise performance of the night by George*
(-) Wanderlei Silva v Michael Bisping (unanimous decision) This fight was quite tense to watch – both buys were banging! I know the Bisping haters have been saying that he was saved by the bell on each round and the fight should have been called at the end of the final round. All I have to say on the matter is that Bisping had an impressive performance and yes, he was saved by the bell at the end of round two when in the Guillotine but until the final seconds of the final round I saw it as a possible win for Bisping. I gave Bisping round 1 and Silva round 2 – round 3 was stolen by Silva in the flurry at the end of the fight. Good performance by both guys! It seems as though when I pick a Brit they lose and if I pick against a Brit they win.... As much as I was disappointed for Michael, I was very pleased to see Silva looking like his old self! I cannot wait to see his next fight! Again, Hayley awards have been selected for this bout and I am pleased to announce they have won: *Toe curler of the night* *Relief of the night* – Silva is getting back to his old self!
(-) Minotauro Nogueira v Cain Velasquez (KO – punches in round 1)
Image Credit: LA Times Ok... this fight ended much quicker than I thought and as I wanted! I was looking forward to seeing a war between these two guys. In answer to my question from my picks – yes Cain could handle himself with Nog in the Octagon – very much so. Velasquez kept the fight standing and without a single takedown attempt landed some nice combos, eventually catching Nog out, finishing him on the ground and taking home KO of the night honours. Apparently the guy who is notoriously hard to finish is becoming a little chinny? I am very happy for Cain entering the upper group of the HW division; however my heart broke to see the disappointment on Nogs face. And that’s the wrap up! In defence of myself – George Sotiropoulos’ performance came somewhat as a surprise and the two main events were VERY hard to pick. Let’s hope I can do better next time! I seemed to do better when I picked with my heart rather than my head..... maybe a change in tactics is in order? See you in March people!
